Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Treatment is a procedure that we use to treat any infection of the tooth and prevent the need for the tooth to be removed.

A root canal treatment is necessary when the tooth is seriously infected. This can be caused by tooth decay, especially when left in the mouth for a long time, leaky old fillings, or as a result of dental trauma through injury.

Sometimes, pain and swelling might be the first indication that a tooth is infected but often it can go undetected because the nerves in damaged teeth can die slowly, desensitising it over time.

The treatment:

The area is first anaesthetised and then the dental pulp is removed with the help of special small instruments by your dentist and then the tooth is disinfected. Afterwhich the whole tooth is filled from inside the pulp canals and a permanent restoration or filling is placed. This is followed by crown placement to strengthen the tooth.

The whole procedure of root canal treatment usually takes a couple of appointments. If more appointments are needed your dentist will tell you at the time. All after care instructions will be given by your dentist. Expect a few xrays to be taken. The procedure is painless but some patients can feel pain after the treatment for a day or two. Your dentist will advise you on the aftercare.
